in Romania only in Dobrudja, in very limited small
populations; one population in north-eastern Bulgaria outside
Romania's borders

The most rare species of Acrocentron subgenus from Romania, which
was once regional endemic to Romanian Dobrudja. It is
still to be found in Romania probably in only two places though the
literature gives at least four (1.the south-western border of
Babadag forest, towards Caugagia, 'locco classico' of the species
where the species was seen by us in 1995 and 2001 and the local
population is almost extinct and 2. on the northern cliff of
Dolojman Cape natural reservation area where yet a large population
can be found)
The presence of species in the Iron Gate defile area from
south-western Romania (and especially in humid grasslands) though
still maintained scriptically by some Romanian authors (Mataca,
2005) is erroneous and in total contradiction with the ecology of
this species.
Since 2007 the species is no longer
endemic to Romania as it was discovered in
north-eastern Bulgaria, see the superbly documented and illustrated
article Petrova,
A.S. (2007) - Centaurea jankae and C. trinervia (Asteraceae) - new
taxa for the Bulgarian flora. Phytologia Balcanica 13(3):

Pictures taken in my garden from Floresti, Cluj
county in may 2004 from plants coming from seeds collected
at Dolojman Cape, Tulcea county in August 2001. The resolution
available to us at the time was low so sorry for the quality of this
set.
